What is the biggest complaint about millennials? Everyone always assumes they are on their phones and are addicted to social media. It is easy to get lost in an endless stream of information and connection. Everything is at everyone’s fingertips. Some perks are getting something delivered in less than two hours, having almost every movie accessible, endless TV streaming, and infinite ways to communicate with people. Millennials came up with the term “FOMO”: the fear of missing out. Even putting your phone down for an hour can feel like you missed out on loads of information. So how can we stop something that feeds our minds?

Set Limits

Like parental controls, most features on your phone can have set time limits. With Instagram, for example, you can manually set a daily time limit. Once you’ve met that limit, you will get a notification. This will help remind you to take a break and find something else to focus on. iPhones can even track weekly screen time and give you a report at the end of the week. If you want to see progress, this is a good way to motivate yourself.

Black and White Mode

Next, it helps to turn on black and white mode.  It may seem dull, but all the colors that we see on our screen make our brain feel active and it pulls us in. On social media, we scroll past pictures, and color can be very distracting. Turning your phone on black and white mode will decrease the sensation our minds feel and limit smartphone addiction.

Notifications

Turn off as many notifications as possible. As soon as we see a message pop up on our phone, we feel a need to reach for it. When we read that notification, we start to look at other things and get distracted. Therefore, it is best to keep the notifications to a minimum. You will feel less obligated to look at your phone if you don’t have notifications turned on.

Phone Stays Out of Bed

Lastly, one of the biggest problems most people have is taking their phone to bed with them. This can be a hard habit to break.  The best thing to do is to get an alarm clock and stop using your phone. Maybe try charging your phone across from your bed and turning it on Do Not Disturb.
